Private Walk-In Clinics
Private walk-in clinics like Medbase, Hirslanden walk-in, and independent urgent care centres offer convenient locations, extended hours, and often more on-site services than public equivalents — at a comparable price.
What are private walk-in clinics?
Private walk-in clinics are for-profit ambulatory care centres that accept patients without an appointment for urgent medical issues. They are operated by private healthcare companies and are distinct from hospital emergency departments. In Switzerland, the largest operators include:
- Medbase: The largest chain, with over 40 locations across Switzerland. Many Medbase centres are located in train stations (Zurich HB, Basel SBB, Bern Bahnhof) and shopping centres, making them highly accessible. They offer walk-in urgent care alongside regular GP services.
- Hirslanden walk-in clinics: The Hirslanden group, Switzerland's largest private hospital network, operates walk-in clinics at several locations. These tend to be co-located with or adjacent to their hospital facilities.
- City Notfall Zurich: An independent urgent care centre in Zurich's city centre, designed specifically for walk-in emergency consultations.
- Ärztezentrum Limmatfeld, Doktor.ch, and others: A growing number of independent medical centres offer same-day walk-in appointments, blurring the line between GP practice and walk-in clinic.
KVG recognition and costs
Most private walk-in clinics are fully recognized under KVG (LAMal). This means your basic health insurance covers the consultation just like any other outpatient doctor visit. The standard billing model applies: Franchise + Selbstbehalt (deductible + co-pay of 10% up to CHF 700 per year).
Costs at private walk-in clinics are generally comparable to public equivalents:
- Simple consultation: CHF 100-180
- Consultation with diagnostics: CHF 150-250 (blood tests, X-ray, urine analysis)
- Complex consultation: CHF 200-400 (multiple diagnostics, minor procedures)
Some private clinics charge slightly higher rates than public Permanence centres, particularly for after-hours surcharges. However, the difference is usually modest and fully covered by KVG.
Convenience and locations
The biggest advantage of private walk-in clinics is convenience:
- Locations: Train stations, shopping centres, and city centres. Medbase at Zurich HB is literally inside the main station — you can walk off a train and into urgent care within minutes.
- Opening hours: Many private clinics have extended hours. Some Medbase locations are open 7:00-22:00 or even later. Weekend and public holiday availability is common.
- Same-day appointments: In addition to pure walk-in, many private centres offer online booking for same-day or next-day slots, reducing wait times.
- Multilingual staff: Private clinics in major cities frequently have staff who speak English, in addition to the local language. This is especially useful for expats and international workers.
Services available
Private walk-in clinics often have more on-site diagnostic equipment than public Permanence centres:
- Imaging: X-ray is standard. Some have ultrasound. A few larger centres have CT access (though this is rare for walk-in clinics).
- Laboratory: On-site blood analysis with rapid results (CRP, blood count, blood sugar). Many can deliver key lab results within 30-60 minutes.
- ECG: Electrocardiogram for cardiac screening is available at most private walk-in clinics.
- Minor procedures: Wound stitching, splinting, abscess drainage, foreign body removal, wound debridement.
- Prescriptions and referrals: Can issue prescriptions, sick notes (Arztzeugnis), referral letters to specialists, and medical certificates for work or sports.
Quality and licensing
Doctors at private walk-in clinics are fully licensed physicians, typically holding FMH certification in general internal medicine or general practice. The clinics are subject to the same cantonal health authority oversight as any other medical practice. Private ownership does not imply lower quality — the regulatory standards are identical.
Many private clinics also participate in quality certification programmes and regularly audit their patient outcomes. If you are concerned about quality, you can verify a doctor's FMH certification through the FMH's public directory.
Walk-in vs. appointment
Most private clinics operate a hybrid model:
- Walk-in slots: A portion of the daily schedule is reserved for walk-in patients. First come, first served, with triage for urgency.
- Pre-booked slots: You can often book a same-day or next-day appointment online or by phone, guaranteeing a specific time slot and reducing your wait.
If your condition allows a few hours' wait, booking online is more efficient. If it is truly urgent and you need to be seen now, walk in and explain the urgency at reception.
Swiss Medi Kids and paediatric walk-in
For children, some private walk-in clinics specialize in paediatric urgent care. Swiss Medi Kids operates dedicated paediatric walk-in centres in several Swiss cities, staffed by paediatricians rather than general practitioners. These are designed for sick children who need same-day care but do not require a hospital.
