Medical Massage
There is an important distinction between medical massage (covered by KVG with a prescription) and wellness massage (not covered). Here is where the line falls and how to access covered treatment.
Medical massage vs wellness massage
KVG distinguishes strictly:
- Medical massage (Medizinische Massage) — performed by a licensed medical masseur on prescription from a doctor, for a specific medical condition. Covered by KVG.
- Wellness massage — performed by any massage therapist for relaxation or general wellbeing. Not covered by KVG.
The same technique can be medical or wellness depending on who performs it and whether there is a prescription.
Who qualifies?
The therapist must hold the Swiss federal diploma as a Medizinischer Masseur EFZ and have a KVG billing agreement (Zulassung). Ask explicitly: "Do you have a KVG Zulassung?"
How to get a prescription
Ask your GP or specialist. The prescription should specify the diagnosis, massage technique, and number of sessions (typically 9, same as physiotherapy).
Commonly treated conditions: chronic back and neck pain, post-surgical scar tissue, lymphatic drainage, certain neurological conditions with muscle spasticity, sports injuries in rehabilitation.
Coverage and costs
Covered sessions are billed to KVG and count toward your franchise and Selbstbehalt. Wellness massage costs CHF 80–160 per session privately. Some supplementary plans include wellness massage benefits.
